My cousin has been fighting Melanoma for the past year. When I first heard about it, I was pretty freaked out about it (like the rest of the family). Then I started reading up about it, the treatments and success stories etc. he would also tell me a bit about what he was going through and I found that the more information I knew about it, the easier it was to deal with it.
I don’t really know how much help I could give anyone, but I’ll be supportive anyway I can.
Actually the one thing I think that may have helped, was just treating him like a normal person. I think it bothered him a little when people would talk to him in the hospital voice, asking him how he was holding up. So even though I’d ask him about his treatments and stuff, I just treated him like I always have.
